Baby with Pumpkin

The spookiest time of the year is just around the corner – with its customary bought costumes and flood of sweet wrappers. Here at The Little Woodpecker, we think the scariest thing is our destruction of our planet, so we’re sharing our top tips for eco-friendly Halloween without compromising any of the ghoulish fun!

1.       Re-use, Re-cycle, Re-fashion.

Instead of just heading online, or to your local costume shop, why not challenge your creativity and make your little ones’ costumes yourself? Re-use and recycle clothes and make up or face paint you already have, have a rummage in charity shops, and raid the recycling bin for cartons and bottles you can use as props.

2.       Statement Dressing.

Why not even make a statement with your costume itself? Five of our favourite eco-warrior Halloween costumes are:

1)      A Snorkelling Polar Bear (to demonstrate the melting ice caps)

2)      Mother Nature

3)      Global Warming (created by dressing as a globe with a thermometer!)

4)      Bag for Life

5)      Tree Hugger (we’d recommend just being a Twig-hugger for the sake of trick or treating though!)

3.       Decorate Sustainably.

And your recycling bins can be used for more than just costumes! See what you can find to customise for quirky Halloween-themed decorations. This is also a fun activity to do with your kids to get them excited on the lead up to October 31st. Why not also make a unique treat bag or box from recycled materials as well? Way more fun than a plastic shopping bag!

4.       Sweet Treats for You and the Planet.

Why not go natural, sustainable, and organic with your sweet offering this year? Sounds scary – but these sweets taste just like some of your favourites – only better!

1)      Biona Cola Bottles – Taste just like you remember…but they are all natural! No artificial flavourings, colourings, or additives. Plus, they are gluten-free, gelatine-free and suitable for vegans – so everyone can eat them!

2)      Nakd Toffee Treat Nibbles – Tiny toffee-flavoured nuggets of cocoa, fruit, and nut, these delicious treats are made from 100% natural ingredients, designed to release good energy slowly. No E-number-related rampages here!

3)      Divine Chocolate Bars – Deliciously good chocolate all made on sustainable, Fairtrade cocoa farms. Tastes good and does good.

4)      Devon Cottage Fudge – Organic and Fairtrade, the ingredients used by Devon Cottage are fully traceable. Using locally-sourced, organic butter and cream and organic, Fairtrade unrefined sugar, this Devonshire staple is crumble, melty and sweet.

5)      The Goody Good Stuff Gummy sweets – Lactose-free, Gluten-free and suitable for vegans, these gummy sweets shouldn’t taste as good as they do… must be sorcery! Made with no artificial colours or flavours, our favourite is the Sour Fruit Salad – but they have 8 tasty flavours to choose from.

5.       Let Jack lend a helping hand.

And, finally, when it comes to your good old Jack-O’-Lantern – make the most of his innards! Toast the pumpkin seeds for a tasty, healthy snack, and add the rest of the pumpkin to your compost heap once Halloween is over.
